Since 2007 the KunstVereineRuhr network is a contiuously growing union of art associations and artist initiatives within the unique cultural setting of the Ruhr metropole. With joint projects such as GrenzGebietRuhr (2010), BLOWIN‘ FREE (2013), Canale Grande (2014) and the Ruhr Residence (2016) the local art associations and artist initiatives present themselves as places of the production and presentation of and the discursive engagement with, contemporary art.

By creating direct contacts between the art producers and recipients the art associations and artist initiatives are providing innovative access to contemporary art. Through the integration of concentrated voluntary forces they traditionally work at the pulse of time and often with only short planning periods. This enables them to act flexibly and to respond to changing cultural, social and economic parameters without delay. As a cultural policy force KunstVereineRuhr makes a constant case for the artistic experiment, the enforcement of civic engagement and the participation of a large public in the contemporary art scene.
